Life cycling data to Glacier

Now that we have created some content in the bucket, we can also enable old content to be archived to Glacier automatically by enabling a life cycle policy on the bucket. To do so, we need to click on the bucket, select the Management tab, and click on Add lifecycle rule:

  1. In Step 1, we need to create a rule name:

  1. In Step 2, we configure the transitions. We can select either current or previous versions to be transitioned to Glacier or S3 Infrequent Access, and we can select the number of days after creation for the transition to be triggered. Here, we can create complex policies that match the guidelines set out in our compliance and governance policies:

  1. In the Expiration step, we can also configure when the objects expire. Object expiration automatically triggers the deletion of the objects within the life cycle rule. This helps automatically clean up data that is not required to be kept for compliance:

  1. In the Review step, we can simply click Save. This will enable our life cycle rule on the bucket:

  1. We can view the life cycle rules in the Management tab of the bucket properties:
