OpsWorks is the right choice when running an existing installation of Chef or Puppet configuration management, and the business driver for cloud adoption identifies the need to reduce management overhead. OpsWorks gives us the exact same level of access and control to a Chef or Puppet environment as a standalone installation would. The OpsWorks solution is fully managed, which means that we will never need to worry about making sure that the Chef or Puppet environment is running, making it highly available, scaling it, and keeping it patched and updated. All of this is taken care of by AWS. We do, however, have the option to fully customize and tune the Chef or Puppet solution within OpsWorks so that we can extract all of the power we require from our chosen configuration management tool.
