Lesson 1: Getting to Know the Workflow

Note

In this lesson and throughout the book, illustrations of the full Timeline panel show the Auto-Keyframe button at the top of the panel. In After Effects 12.2 and later, that button is no longer in the Timeline panel. Instead, to use the feature, choose Enable Auto-Keyframe from the Timeline panel menu.

Tip added to “Creating a project and importing footage” section (pages 10-14 in the printed book).

Reload footage

In After Effects 12.2 and later, choose File > Reload Footage to load footage items that were missing when you opened a project. For example, if items aren’t available until you access an external drive, choose File > Reload Footage after you mount the drive.

Note added to the “Controlling the brightness of the user interface” section (page 35 in the printed book).

Addition to Preferences dialog box

The illustration of the Preferences dialog box was created using After Effects 12.0. In 12.1 and later, the dialog box includes the Use Contrasting Color For Mask Path option, so what you see on your screen does not match the illustration in the book. (When the Use Contrasting Color For Mask Path option is selected, After Effect selects a label color for the mask that is different from the colors where the mask point was first drawn.)
