IN MEMORIAM
DANIEL J. TEARPOCK

Daniel J. Tearpock was a noted scientist, author, and entrepreneur. Without Dan, this book would not be possible. He was the past chairman and CEO of Subsurface Consultants & Associates LLC (SCA), headquartered in Houston, Texas. SCA is an international upstream petroleum consultancy and training company. In addition to managing the overall company, he conducted and supervised a variety of consulting projects in the areas of exploration and development, acquisitions and divestitures, as well as serving as project manager or advisor to various oil companies. He also conducted certain industry training courses and seminars around the world.

Mr. Tearpock authored or co-authored three books and more than 30 technical articles in the areas of project management, petroleum subsurface mapping, shared earth models, structural geology, and geothermal energy. He generated numerous exploration and development projects, either as the sole generator or as part of an organized team. The largest development discovery was 4.5 million BO in the offshore Gulf of Mexico in 1980. The largest exploration discovery was more than 250 BCF of gas in the offshore Gulf of Mexico in 1988.

Some of Dan Tearpock’s recognitions and honors include Honored Professional in Marquis’ Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, 1998–1999 Edition; 1998 Recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the Bloomsburg University Alumni Association; Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist, 1996 and 1998 (sponsored by USA Today, NASDAQ, Ernst & Young LLP, and the Kauffman Foundation); and Honored Professional of National Directory of Who’s Who in Executives and Professionals, 1995-1996 Edition. In 2014, the Gulf Coast Association Geological Societies dedicated the GCAGS Transactions volume to Mr. Tearpock. In recent years, he also received multiple honors and awards commemorating his professional achievements, including the AAPG Division of Professional Affairs’ Heritage Award, the AAPG Honorary Member Award, and nomination to the Advisory Board of his alma mater, Bloomsburg University College of Science and Technology.

Mr. Tearpock served as an adjunct associate professor at Tulane University (1984–85), teaching in the Master of Petroleum Engineering program. He was responsible for teaching several geoscience courses. He was also a geology instructor at Montgomery College (1974–75).

Mr. Tearpock received his bachelor’s degree in earth science from Bloomsburg University (1970) and his master’s degree in geology from Temple University (1977). He was a certified petroleum geologist (certification no. 4114) and a member of various organizations, including the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, American Geological Institute, American Petroleum Institute, European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers, Geological Society of America, Houston Geological Society, Indonesian Petroleum Association, Lafayette Geological Society, New Orleans Geological Society, Society of Exploration Geophysicists, and Society of Petroleum Engineers.
