About the Authors

Scott Keller is a senior partner in the Southern California office of McKinsey & Company. He joined the firm in 1995. He co-leads McKinsey’s global CEO and Board Excellence service line, which is part of the Firm’s Strategy and Corporate Finance practice. He is also a leader in the Firm’s Organization Practice. He spends the vast majority of his time serving Fortune 100 CEOs and top teams in leading enterprise-wide, multiyear change programs, often also playing a direct coaching role to CEOs and senior teams.

He is the co-founder and a lead faculty member of McKinsey’s Change Leaders Forums and Executive Transitions Masterclasses, and a featured speaker at multiple senior executive roundtable events, including at the World Economic Forum. He is also a guest lecturer at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, University of Dublin’s Trinity Business School, and St. Mary’s College of California’s Executive MBA program.

Scott has written multiple books on organization effectiveness, including Leading Organizations: Ten Timeless Truths (2017), Organization Answers: A Practical Guide to Creating a High-Performing Organization (2015), Breaking New Ground: Making a Successful Transition into Your New Executive Role (2013), Beyond Performance: How Great Organizations Build Ultimate Competitive Advantage (2011), Performance and Health: An Evidence-based Approach to Transforming Your Organization (2010), and The Performance Culture Imperative: A Hard-nosed Approach to the Soft Stuff (2007). Among his many articles are three of the most read McKinsey Quarterly articles of all time, “The CEO’s Role in Leading Transformation,” “The Irrational Side of Change Management,” and “Increasing the Meaning Quotient at Work.” Scott is also a featured writer on HBR.com.

Outside McKinsey, Scott is a co-founder of Digital Divide Data, an award-winning social enterprise that utilizes a sustainable IT-service model to benefit some of the world’s most disadvantaged people. He is also the founder and leader of a global affinity group for parents of special-needs children.

An avid traveler, Scott has been to 194 of the world’s 196 countries. His favorite place, however, is his home in Seal Beach, California, where he, his wife, and three boys enjoy the surf, sun, sand, and skydiving. He also plays lead guitar in a local heavy metal band.

Scott holds an MBA and a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and has also worked as a manufacturing manager with Procter & Gamble and a photovoltaic engineer for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Bill Schaninger, PhD, joined McKinsey’s London office in 2000. Bill was part of the team that created the Organizational Health Index (OHI) and the Influence Model. Over the course of his time at McKinsey, Bill has developed and led the Organizational Diagnostics team, the North America Transformational Change service line, and the Global Talent Management service line. He has also been the Global Knowledge Leader for the Organization Practice.

Bill now focuses his energy on helping CEOs, CHROs, government leaders, and other executives across a broad range of organizational topics. He brings strong experience in large-scale change, strategic human resources, organizational redesign, and culture.

Bill holds a BA and MBA from Moravian College. He also has an MS and PhD from Auburn University. Bill has been published in academic and professional journals and is a frequent speaker at conferences globally.

In his continued commitment to his community, Bill holds a seat on both the Board of Directors for United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley and the Advisory Board for the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University, and he is a trustee for Moravian College.
