About the Authors

Dr. Michael L. Shuler is the Eckert Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University. His research has focused on mathematical models of cell, heterologous protein expression systems, bioremediation, plant cell tissue culture processes, and “Body-on-a-Chip” technology for drug development. Many of those technologies are being used commercially.

Dr. Fikret Kargi is a retired professor of Environmental Engineering from Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir, Turkey. He was the former Chair of Environmental Sciences. His recent research interests include hydrogen gas production from wastes by fermentation and electrohydrolysis, development of novel biofilm, and advanced oxidation processes for wastewater treatment.

Dr. Matthew P. DeLisa is the William L. Lewis Professor of Engineering in the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell University. His research focuses on understanding and controlling the molecular mechanisms underlying protein biogenesis—folding and assembly, membrane translocation, and posttranslational modifications—in the complex environment of a living cell. His contributions to science and engineering include the invention of numerous commercially important technologies for facilitating the discovery, design, and manufacturing of human drugs and seminal discoveries in the areas of cellular protein folding and protein translocation.
