Chapter 13

1. This is a fictitious speech modeled from David Foster Wallace’s 2005 commencement speech to the graduating class at Kenyon College. Miss Hughes School for Little Folks, however, was real. I graduated kindergarten in 1953 in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The school was founded in 1932 and operated out of her home. The school moved to St. James Church in 1962, where, unfortunately, it closed in 2020.
