Chapter 2 Assignments

Formatting your card

While you have probably already started to use your camera, make sure you are familiar with formatting the memory card. I highly recommend that you transfer to your computer any images you have already taken, and then format your card now, if you haven’t already. Every time you transfer a card of images to your computer, you should reformat your card to get it ready for your next set.

Updating your firmware

Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of your camera’s firmware. The 6D has many features that are brand new to DSLRs, such as built-in Wi-Fi and GPS. Updating the firmware will only improve the performance and functionality of your camera.

Experiment with exposure

Get out there and begin taking images with your camera. No matter what shooting mode you are in, pay attention to the exposure settings being chosen for your images. Go back into this chapter and take notes on what to look for. Exposure is one of the most important elements of photography.

Learn your lenses

Whether you purchased one lens or ten, begin putting them to use. Try to notice the differences between the lenses. To get you started, take note of the minimum and maximum aperture, minimum focusing distance, and sharpness of each lens. Knowing which lens to reach for in a given situation will save time when you’re out in the field.
