Platform as a Service (PaaS)

When developers build web-based solutions, they must have a web server that is connected to the Internet upon which they can place their solutions to make them accessible to users.

Platform as a service (PaaS) solutions provide a collection of hardware and software resources that developers can use to build and deploy applications within the cloud. Depending on their needs, developers may use a Windows-based PaaS solution or a Linux-based PaaS.

Using PaaS, developers eliminate the need to buy and maintain hardware, as well as the need to install and manage operating system and database software. Because the computing resources no longer reside in the data center, but rather in the cloud, the resources can scale up or down based on application demand, and the company can pay for only those resources it consumes. Further, because PaaS eliminates the developer’s need to worry about servers, the focus is on the application and often the web-based solution can be deployed more quickly.

CASE 3-1 Google App Engine as a PaaS

In Chapter 1, “Introducing Cloud Computing,” you learned that Google provides PaaS and infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offerings within its Google Cloud Platform. Google App Engine, sometimes called GAE, is a PaaS solution that lets developers create and host web-based applications that reside and run on services managed by Google, as shown in FIGURE 3-1.

Like all PaaS solutions, the Google App Engine provides and administrators the underlying system software, allowing developers to focus on their own applications. Currently, Google App Engine provides platform support for a variety of programming languages, the most common of which are Java, Python, node.js, and Go.

To help developers get started, Google allows them to get started with Google App Engine for free. As the application grows in use (measured by network traffic into and out of the application), the monthly price increases.

The primary Google App Engine features include the following:

Support for dynamic web pages
Data storage and query support through a fully managed database
Load balancing for application scalability
Application program interface (API) support for application-based email through Google services
Support for application versioning
Built-in application diagnostics
Application security
