No matter how broadly my professional network expands, what I observe about humans and how we can enhance our communication effectiveness remains mostly constant. From the first-generation college student in a speech course to the university president rehearsing a commencement address. From the MBA student preparing for interviews to the senior product manager prepping for a difficult conversation, and from the physician who is developing a bedside manner to the CEO prepping for the next earnings call. The faces change, the situations are unique, but important for each of us is understanding and learning to master the communication essentials.

If you are looking for a list of fast facts, search the internet and you will find many sources wrapped in clickbait waiting for you. But be forewarned, mastering communication doesn’t work like that. Instead, communication is kind of like running. You can’t read a web page on running and then win the Boston Marathon. You have to dig deep and do the work. Fortunately, the work can be fun.
