EXPERIENCE Itineraries

3 DAYS

in Miami

Day 1

Morning

Start your day on Ocean Drive to marvel at the vividly restored Art Deco buildings that line the street. Call in at the Wolfsonian Museum on Washington Avenue, once a warehouse where, in the 1920s, the wealthy stored their valuables during hot, humid summers when they fled north. Now it’s a museum of the decorative arts.

Afternoon

Spend some time walking along the shore of Miami’s stunning beach, admiring the colorful lifeguard stations and beautiful ocean vistas. Pick a spot and settle in for a few hours of soaking up the sun – maybe taking a dip in the water if you can tear yourself away from the luxury of doing nothing at all.

Evening

Find a hotel with seafront dining to end your day, like the Ocean Grill at the Setai Hotel, then take a walk along the shoreline to commune barefoot with the surf.

Day 2

Morning

Breakfast in Little Havana on Calle Ocho, either at Versailles or El Rey De Las Fritas, then head west to Brickell Key, a perfect artificial triangular island of jogging tracks. Look out over the water for superb skyscraper views of downtown Miami.

Afternoon

Find lunch in the charming old Financial District at The Langford Hotel, built in the 1920s as the Bank of Miami. Then travel north to the Pérez Museum on Biscayne Boulevard, with its 2,000 works of art and, beyond it, the modern Institute of Contemporary Art, one of Miami’s most experimental art spaces.

Evening

Head back into Little Havana for genuine Cuban nightlife at the Cubaocho Museum & Performing Arts Center then check out the E11EVEN Miami for some quintessential Miami nightlife.

Day 3

Morning

Start with breakfast in the Fontana at the Biltmore, a great opportunity to look around this classic Prohibition-era hotel, now restored to its splendid 1920s color scheme. Afterwards, take your time driving around the Coral Gables estate. There’s a wider range of architectural styles than first seems apparent – seven in all, including Chinese and South African. Be sure to stop by George Merrick’s own house and take time out for a dip in the Rococo Venetian Pool.

Afternoon

Pull in by Coral Gables City Hall to snap the statue of George Merrick, the visionary who created this inland resort from a swamp. Then head east down his Miracle Mile and on to Vizcaya, Miami’s finest stately home, where Pope John Paul II was received by President Ronald Reagan on his first visit to the US.

Evening

Enjoy dinner al fresco with splendid views over the Dinner Quay Marina and The Barnacle Historic State Park at the Panorama Bar, which sits atop the Sonesta Hotel. On a clear evening you can see all the way back to the Biltmore.
