Experience Downtown and Coral Gables

The early city of Miami existed on 1 sq mile (2.5 sq km) on the banks of the Miami River River. Even after World War II, Miami was still little more than a seaside or sleepy resort, and it wasn’t until the arrival of Cuban exiles from 1959 onward that Miami grew into a true metropolis. The effect of this Cuban influx is visible most clearly on the streets both Downtown and in Little Havana. The area of the original city is now the hub of Miami’s downtown financial district that developed thanks to a banking boom in the 1980s. Downtown’s futuristic skyscrapers, bathed nightly in neon, demonstrate the city’s status as a major financial and trade center.

Coral Gables, one of the country’s richest neighborhoods, is (and feels like) a separate city within Greater Miami. Aptly named the City Beautiful, its elegant homes line winding avenues shaded by banyans and live oaks. They back up to hidden canals and many have their own jetties. Regulations ensure that new buildings use the same architectural vocabulary advocated by George Merrick when he planned Coral Gables in the 1920s.
