An increasingly popular route heading east from the Cape Winelands, the R62 runs between Ashton in the Breede River Valley and Oudtshoorn in the Klein Karoo. En route, it traverses scenic passes flanked by the dramatically stratified Cape Fold Mountains, pretty rural towns distinguished by their time-warped architecture and agricultural bounty, and some fine off-the-beaten-track wine estates. In theory, you could cover the route in one longish day, but a more relaxing option is to take an overnight break to soak up the scenic surrounds and legendary Karoo hospitality.
