3 Days

in Cape Town and the Cape Peninsula

Vast and varied, South Africa brims with travel possibilities. These suggested itineraries pick out the highlights of each region, to help you plan your time in this beautiful country.

Day 1

Morning

Start with an early breakfast before catching the first cable car for the breathtaking ascent up Table Mountain. Work up an appetite exploring the plateau’s gentle network of self-guided trails – with plenty of stops to admire the spectacular views – then grab lunch at the self-service Table Mountain Café.

Afternoon

Back in the city centre, take a tour of Cape Town’s past with a leisurely stroll from the shady Company’s Garden to the Castle of Good Hope. On the way, call in at the inspirational District Six Museum.

Evening

Relax over a drink at one of the many bars that line bohemian Long Street, then sample the pan-African menu (and, with luck, live music) at the legendary Mama Africa restaurant.

Day 2

Morning

After a harbourside breakfast at the V&A Waterfront, take the 9am or 11am guided tour to Robben Island. Keep an eye out for dolphins on the crossing to this African Alcatraz, where Nelson Mandela and others were incarcerated under apartheid.

Afternoon

Enjoy a light lunch back at the V&A Waterfront, then dedicate the rest of the afternoon to exploring this vast harbourfront complex. Dive into the deep at the Two Oceans Aquarium, soak up some culture at the dazzling Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa or indulge in a spot of retail therapy at the hundreds of shops.

Evening

Settle in for a relaxed evening at Quay Four, enjoying the scenery with a sundowner from the extensive craft beer and wine menu, followed by a delicious seafood dinner.

Day 3

Morning

Embark on a day tour of the Cape Peninsula by following the cliff-hugging Chapman’s Peak toll road to the Cape of Good Hope. Catch the funicular to Cape Point Lighthouse to enjoy dramatic cliff-top views over the Peninsula’s southern tip.

Afternoon

After a leisurely lunch in Simon’s Town, pass an enjoyable hour or two in the company of the effortlessly entertaining penguins that inhabit Boulders Beach.

Evening

End the afternoon at Groot Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine-producing estate. After admiring the Winelands scenery and lovely Cape Dutch architecture, enjoy fine dining and the estate’s superb wine in the historic Jonkerhuis Restaurant.
