Experience Beyond the Centre
Some of Madrid’s most interesting districts are found outside the centre. Affluent Salamanca is named after the aristocrat, José de Salamanca y Mayol, who built the elegant mansions here in the 1860s. In stark contrast, Chueca, to the west, was originally home to tile-makers and blacksmiths but was transformed into a bohemian area in the early 1980s, when it starred in the street films of Pedro Almodóvar. Meanwhile, Malasaña was the principal site of the 1808 uprising against the French, but became a hipster hangout in the 1960s.
