Majestic Modernisme

Also known as Catalan Art Nouveau, Modernisme has shaped Barcelona’s skyline and the city is home to the greatest concentration of Modernista architecture in the world. Gaudí’s fairy-tale constructions are the most famous, such as Casa Batlló, La Pedrera and Sagrada Família. For more Modernista marvels.

Baroque Cities

The sumptuous Palacio Real and La Granja de San Ildefonso exemplify the dramatic Baroque style, and Salamanca bristles with lavish Churrigueresque constructions – the most ornate expression of Spanish Baroque. The sandstone buildings that surround the magnificent Plaza Mayor glow in the sun, earning Salamanca the nickname La Dorada – “The Golden City”.

Romanesque Valley

Originating in Italy in the late 10th century, Romanesque architecture quickly spread first to France and, from there, to Spain. To see some of the most remarkable examples, take a drive through the Vall de Boí. Topped with lofty bell towers, the Romanesque churches in this valley are adorned with intricate ironwork and skilful replicas of the original frescoes. To admire the real ones, head to Barcelona’s Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.

Gothic Glory

Flying buttresses, pointed arches and rib vaults characterize Gothic architecture. Seek out the pair of flamboyant spires atop Burgos Cathedral or head to León Cathedral – known as the “House of Light” thanks to its huge windows. But Girona’s and Seville’s cathedrals are the biggest.

Moorish Marvels

Characterized by its horseshoe arches and elaborate stucco work, Spain’s Moorish architecture transports you to the Islamic world. To travel across the continents, check out the azulejo-bedecked Real Alcázar in Seville, walk beneath the red-and-white arches of Córdoba’s Mezquita or explore the sumptuous rooms of the Alhambra. For a truly unforgettable experience, tour the Alhambra at night, when the moon is reflected in the patios’ mirror-still pools.
