Experience Beyond the Centre

A period of radical redevelopment of Barcelona’s outskirts in the late 1980s and early 1990s gave it a wealth of new buildings, parks and squares and restored a treasure trove of Modernista buildings. The city’s main station, Sants, was rebuilt and the neighbouring Parc de l’Espanya Industrial and Parc de Joan Miró were created, containing lakes, modern sculpture and futuristic architecture. In the west of the city, where the streets start to climb steeply, the historic royal palace and monastery of Pedralbes and Gaudí’s famous Park Güell were restored, and the Torre de Collserola, built for the 1992 Olympics, gave barcelonins the chance to see it all from above.
