Experience The Basque Country, Navarra and La Rioja

The Basque people are thought to be one of the oldest races in Europe. Occupying a region that straddles the border of what is now France and Spain for millennia, they are most likely descended from early Iberian farming peoples. Their isolation in mountainous regions has prevented them from complete assimilation with the Roman descendants of France and Spain, even to this day. Their distinct culture is different to anything else found in Europe and their language, euskara, isn’t related to any known dialect, alive or dead, in the world. Attempts to suppress the Basque culture have long been resisted, most recently by the armed separatist group ETA, who fought violently for Basque independence until their dissolution in 2018.

Navarra was once an independent kingdom containing areas from modern Navarra, the Basque Country and La Rioja, but it came under the control of the Crown of Aragon in the early 16th century. The modern autonomous region came into being following Spain’s transition to democracy in the 1970s and 1980s.

La Rioja was controlled by the Romans, the Visigoths and the Moors of Al-Andalus before its reconquest by the Christians in the 10th century. Today it is world famous as a producer of the fine eponymous wine.
