Golfers on the Riviera have a choice of two championship-level courses at Cancún, one in Playacar and one at Puerto Aventuras. Hotels can book greens for you. North of Mérida there is also a private club, which can be booked through hotels.

2. Sailing, Windsurfing, and Kayaking

The best places to rent boats are Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. Hotels may have dinghies available for use by guests. A day’s sailing is a great way to explore lesser-known stretches of the coast. Windsurfing is at its finest around Isla Mujeres and Akumal, and the best spots for kayaking are around Puerto Morelos and Punta Solimán.

3. Diving

The Mayan Riviera is the site of the second-largest reef in the world. Scuba Cancun offers diving opportunities in Cancún, Riviera Maya, and Cozumel.

4. Fishing

Conditions for deep-sea and inshore fishing in the Yucatán are outstanding, and the lagoons south of the Riviera by Ascencion Bay are a must for fly-fishing fans. The peak deep-sea fishing season runs from March to June.

5. Tennis

Many resort hotels have tennis courts. In Cancún, Hotel Omni’s courts are open to all, while those at RIU Caribe Hotel are for residents only. The Club de Golf Cancún also has two courts.

6. Cycling

The most attractive towns for cycling are Cancún, Isla Mujeres, Tulum, and Valladolid, which has a lovely cycle path to Cenote Dzitnup. Many Cancún hotels have bikes, and there are rental shops in the other three destinations.

7. Skydiving

Sky Dive Playa will offer visitors a bird’s-eye view of the Riviera as they plummet down harnessed to an instructor, or on their own if they have skydiving experience.

Aerosaab at Playa del Carmen and Fly Tours Cancún at Cancún offer aerial sightseeing tours over the Riviera, Chichén Itzá, and other parts of the Yucatán Peninsula.

9. Parasailing

Soar above Cancún with the “Skyrider” at Aqua World. More basic operations are to be found at Cancún beach and at Playa del Carmen.

10. Jungle Tours

2. Isla Mujeres

Highly regarded by deep-sea fishing enthusiasts, with able captains who seek out amberjack, marlin, and more.

3. Cozumel

A base for many expert deep-sea captains, who also offer trips to the inshore flats.

4. Cancún

For easy-access, fun fishing, with trips available from watersports centers such as Aqua World.

5. Playa del Carmen

Many Playa dive shops also arrange fishing trips, especially in the sailfishing season (March–June).

6. Puerto Aventuras

The most luxuriously equipped fishing center on the coast. Hosts a big deep-sea tournament each May.

7. Boca Paila and Punta Allen

Fly-fishing and, above all, bonefish followers make their way to the remote fishing lodges along this road.

8. Isla Holbox

A long way from the conveniences of the Riviera, but loved by fishermen who like a really relaxing time.

9. El Cuyo

The one bar, La Conchita, is the place to go to find a boat and a guide. Shark fishing is a specialty of the north coast.

10. Río Lagartos

No well-organized facilities here, but boatmen will show you their fishing grounds as well as the flamingo lagoons.
