1. Villa Comunale

This urban park (see Villa Comunale) in central Naples has a playground for little ones and there are always plenty of families enjoying the gardens and walkways. The biggest attraction here is the Stazione Zoologica (Zoological Institute), the oldest aquarium in Europe; however, it is currently closed for renovation.

Italy’s first railway was inaugurated by King Ferdinand II in 1839 and 150 years later the railway workshop was opened as a museum. It is the largest of its kind in Europe and has impressive displays, such as a reconstruction of the first royal train and a line-up of the later, lavishly gilded carriages.

3. Centro Musei delle Scienze Naturali

The Università di Napoli Federico II houses five museums in one building with sections on Physics, Mineralogy (currently closed for renovation), Anthropology, Zoology and Palaeontology, the latter with fascinating dinosaur exhibits.

4. Science City

A hands-on “experimentorium” (see Science City, Bagnoli), with something for everyone. Included in the exhibits are up-to-date computer gizmos that seem to transcend language barriers, and a planetarium (booking ahead required).

5. Edenlandia

Established in 1965, this ageing amusement park, the oldest in Europe, is a favourite among the locals. Rides include a Big Dipper, a Ghost Train, a Canoe Flume and Bumper Cars, as well as several more hightech options. An old-fashioned choice that never fails to delight is the Little Train, which covers about 0.5 km (0.30 mile) as it transports visitors through the park.

6. Zoo di Napoli

This zoo is home to more than 400 animals, including monkeys, lions, kangaroos and zebras. A variety of educational activities are also organized for kids.

7. Solfatara

A geothermal playground (see Solfatara, Pozzuoli) that will fascinate budding geologists, this congealed lava cap plugging up a dormant volcano is an expanse of hissing, bubbling terrain. There’s even a camp site with restaurant.

8. Vesuvius

No child will ever forget a trip up this volcano (see Vesuvius) and a peek over the rim into the steaming abyss below. It’s a fairly short, steep walk – only about half an hour – and the thrill will stay with them for years.

9. Ospedale delle Bambole

Children are captivated by the Doll Hospital, both for the concept as well as for the array of dolls that are here waiting to be “cured”. Adults, too, will find this unique workshop fascinating. There is also a shop, so your child won’t necessarily have to say goodbye to a new-found friend.

10. Marina Piccola Beach, Capri

This is one of the most child-friendly beaches (see Marina Piccola) in the area. It has tranquil waters and well-protected bathing areas. There are handy toy and swimming gear shops, and a choice of places to eat. Changing rooms and sunbeds are available.
