Just reading theory will only get you so far. Inevitably, you must get your hands dirty in order to further your understanding.

This chapter provides a hands-on example for those interested in exploring the J2EE technology firsthand.

This is accomplished by:

  • Providing you with sufficient detail about a hypothetical but concrete problem

  • Walking through several use cases from analysis to implementation

  • Using simulated interaction with end users and others to approximate a more realistic iterative scenario

  • Providing accompanying implementation to continue the case study

  • Offering suggestions for changes to the implementation to enhance the functionality of the case study

  • Providing guidelines on additional use cases to analyze, design, and implement in a reader-led iteration

All this is done in the context of following a customized version of the Rational Unified Process (RUP) in order to reinforce the software development ideas discussed in this book.

All of the names of businesses, service marks, and so on used in this example are fictional. Any resemblance to real entities is purely coincidental.
