Chapter 21. Customizing Without Programming

One of AutoCAD’s greatest assets is the degree to which this program can be personalized. Users with little or no formal programming knowledge or skills can learn to customize AutoCAD.

Customizing AutoCAD to suit your needs is one of the best ways to increase your productivity. If you can make AutoCAD work in a manner that facilitates your needs, you obviously will be more productive. In fact, AutoCAD is so easy to customize that in a matter of hours, you can tailor this program to match your working environment.

The first part of this chapter focuses on topics that allow you to customize the accessing of AutoCAD commands. This chapter does not, however, discuss the process of adding new commands to AutoCAD. (Adding new commands is covered in Chapter 22, “Introduction to AutoLISP Programming.”) The topics of writing AutoCAD scripts and making slide libraries will be the focus of the second half of the chapter.

This chapter covers the following topics:

  • Creating command aliases

  • Customizing toolbars

  • Customizing menus

  • Scripts and slides
