1. The stock of nonmarketable Treasury securities on the same date totaled $5.2 trillion. Of this, $4.6 trillion was nonpublic debt (held in government accounts), $0.2 trillion was held by private investors in the form of U.S. savings bonds, and $0.2 trillion was held in a special series by state and local governments (Monthly Statement of the Public Debt, www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/mspd/mspd.htm).
