1. Charge Your Battery

While this step might sound obvious, a fully charged battery will give you more opportunities to explore and experiment with your 6D. You will find that the battery in the camera box does have a little bit of juice (power), but generally this is barely enough to capture a handful of images. Plugging in your battery charger and charging your battery right away also gives you enough time to continue reading this book so that you are better prepared to take advantage of all the features of your new 6D.

Most new DSLRs, including the Canon 6D, allow you to register your battery with the camera. This allows your camera to distinguish between multiple batteries, providing information that is unique to each battery, such as the remaining power, how many photos have been taken since the battery was last charged, and a rating based on recharge performance (Figure 1.1).

Registering Your Battery

1. Turn on your camera.

2. Press the Menu button on the back of the camera.

3. Move the Main dial until you have reached the last setup menu (third tab from the right) (A).

4. Use the Quick Control Dial to select the Battery Info option, and press the Set button.

5. Press the Info button on the back of your 6D.

6. Make sure the Register option is selected, and press the Set button. Now your battery is registered (B).
