Not all portraits are shot with the subject sitting in a chair, posed and ready for the photo. Occasionally you might want to capture an action shot of an individual in order to best represent who they are or what kind of work they do.

For the photo in Figure 5.13, I set my camera to Shutter Priority mode because I knew there would be a good deal of movement involved. I wanted to make sure I could freeze the action, so I set the shutter speed to 1/2000 of a second. I used the AI Servo focus mode to track my subject as he moved down the river, and I set the drive mode to Continuous shooting so I could take a number of images in rapid succession, increasing my chances of getting the shot.

Beautiful Black and White Portraits

Occasionally you might find that a portrait just looks better in black and white. A black and white portrait puts the focus on the subject’s expression or skin tone (Figure 5.14). You can use the Monochrome picture style, but this comes at a cost, depending on the image format you are using. If you shoot in JPEG, your image will forever be in black and white. If you shoot in RAW, then your image will look black and white in your camera, but once you import the file to your computer, most photo-editing applications will remove the Monochrome picture style and you will be left with a color image.

I prefer to do my black and white conversions while editing the photo on my computer, and I encourage you to do the same. Using the Canon Digital Photo Professional software that is included with your camera (or a third-party photo-editing application), you can convert color images to black and white—and still maintain the ability to return the image to color if you want to.
