One of the hallmarks of the World Wide Web is that documents published on the Web can have references, or hyperlinks, to points in the same document or to other Web documents. One great way to take advantage of this feature would be to create a workbook in which you track sales by product and have a cell at the end of each product’s row with a hyperlink to in-depth product information. That information could be on another worksheet in the same workbook, in another file on your computer, in a file on another computer, or on a Web page. Another type of hyperlink is the mailto hyperlink, which, when clicked, lets you send an e-mail message to the address referred to in the link.
Add a Hyperlink to a Place in the Same File
Click the cell where you want to place a hyperlink.
Click the Insert tab.
Click Hyperlink.
Click Place In This Document.
Click the sheet to which you want to link.
Type the cell reference of the cell to which you want to link.
Type a short phrase to describe the hyperlink’s target.
Click OK.
Tip
Excel 2007 also enables you to create links to any named ranges or data tables in your workbook.
Add a Hyperlink to Another File
Click the cell in which you want to place a hyperlink.
Click the Insert tab.
Click Hyperlink.
Click Existing File Or Web Page.
Click Current Folder.
Click the file to which you want to link.
Type a short phrase to describe the hyperlink’s target.
Click OK.
Tip
You can view recently used files by clicking Recent Files in the Look In pane.
Add a Hyperlink to a Web Page
Click the cell in which you want to place a hyperlink.
Click the Insert tab.
Click Hyperlink.
Click Existing File Or Web Page.
Click Browsed Pages.
Click the Web page to which you want to link.
Type a short phrase to describe the hyperlink’s target.
Click OK.
Caution
When you click Browsed Pages, the Insert Hyperlink dialog box displays all of the Web pages you visited recently.
Add a Mailto Hyperlink
Click the cell in which you want to place a hyperlink.
Click the Insert tab.
Click Hyperlink.
Click E-Mail Address.
Type the e-mail address to which you want to link.
Type text describing the hyperlink.
Type a default subject for the e-mail message.
Click OK.
Tip
You can just type the target e-mail address in the E-Mail Address field. Excel adds the mailto: prefix for you.
