JERRY DENYS

I’m an active, young 70-year-old. I’ve been practicing Pilates for more than 12 years. My first introduction to Pilates was when a friend talked me into taking a mat class at the National Institute for Fitness and Sports in Indianapolis. Feeling a little intimidated at first, I found the class to be fun and physically challenging. I continued to go to classes and started incorporating Pilates into a golf-specific training program. I began to increase my strength, flexibility, and concentration. The Pilates method helped me train my mind and body—and hopefully extend my years playing golf.

I’m still learning. Using Pilates equipment, I continue to take studio and private classes. In fact, I have more Pilates equipment in my home than golf clubs. I’ve been fortunate to have excellent instructors over the years to help motivate and inspire me to step out of my comfort zone. My goal is to ”keep moving.” Pilates is not only an exercise method—it’s also a lifestyle. I believe no matter what age you are, Pilates is a lifelong journey.

Note: Jerry was also a model for Linda Paden’s Idiot’s Guides: Pilates (Alpha Books, 2014).
