86 / LEADING FROM A DISTANCE
Training remotely
Sta expect their employers to invest in their development. That
applies just as much for those working remotely as for those sharing
a work space. As a remote manager, ensure your team has access to
online materials to grow their skills from a distance.
Webinars
A webinar is an online session
for a remote audience. It usually
features a presentation, a
main speaker, and interaction
from attendees. Record your
webinars to keep as resources
in your training library for
others to use.
Online courses
You can make your own
company courses, pay a
third party to provide them
for you, or use training content
from an online provider,
such as LinkedIn Learning
or Coursera.

TRY TEAM-LED TRAINING
Providing a suite of training
materials that you as a
manager think is useful
is a good start. But also
ask your sta what kind
of professional training
would benefit them. Some
of the best ideas come from
employees who know how
they want their careers to
progress and have identified
learning opportunities that
you may not have thought of.
Give employees the training
they want—they will get
much more out of it and
be more likely to stay with
the organization longer.
Investing in the future
A well-designed sta-training
program not only helps your
organization improve its collective
skill set, but also motivates sta to
stay longer and make more meaningful
contributions to the business. In the
absence of face-to-face learning, it’s
vital to have an engaging training and
development program available for
employees, wherever they are.

Ask for feedback
Learn from trainees. Send
out anonymous surveys to
every attendee to gather
honest feedback on how
their training went.
One-on-one coaching
Ask people who are experts in
their areas of the business to
run virtual one-on-one coaching
sessions with new starters,
junior team members, or anyone
who needs training in highly
technical subjects.
Videos and podcasts
A compelling video grabs
people’s attention—make sure
any audiovisual content you
use has high-quality pictures,
sound, and subtitles. Podcasts,
prerecorded audio files that are
usually presented in a series,
are easy to prepare in advance,
and are popular with trainees.
Employee knowledge
Turn your stas expertise
into training materials. A
blog post from one of your web
developers or a how-to video
by a call-center worker can
help others pick up new skills
and learn about other parts of
your organization.
