Interactive Exhibits

Lisbon’s many museums offer hands-on exhibits that adults and children alike will love – try the Museu da Carris, where kids can learn about the city’s public transport system while clambering over vintage buses. There’s also the Oceanário, one of Europe’s largest aquariums, or the Museu da Água, a captivating attraction that is located in an eerie underground reservoir – and offers even spookier tunnel tours.

Getting Around

Even travelling around Lisbon can be exciting, with a wide range of unusual transport options on offer. The intriguing elevadores (street lifts) have been gliding up the city’s steepest hills since the 19th century, as has the Santa Justa lift, which is topped by a breathtaking viewing platform. Weave through the tight streets of the Alfama on the iconic tram 28, or catch the public ferry to Cacilhas to admire Lisbon’s skyline from across the water. If your kids have a head for heights, take to the skies on a cable car at the Parque das Nações, from where you can see one of Europe’s longest bridges stretched out ahead of you.

Outdoor Fun

In a sunshine-saturated city like Lisbon, there are plenty of outdoor activities to keep little ones entertained. Take a train along the coast to the golden sands of Estoril for safe sea swimming, or head to Caparica’s huge beach, ideal for bodyboarding or surfing. Back in town, hire bikes near Belém and let the family loose along the traffic-free riverfront.
