CARE

The variegated snake plant is easy to care for and thrives on neglect, so it’s an excellent choice for offices and people who are often away from home. It copes well with low humidity and partial shade and is comfortable at the back of a room, where many other plants would suffer from insufficient light.

Plant in cactus potting mix, allowing the surface to dry out between waterings in the spring and summer. During this active growing time, apply a half-strength, balanced fertilizer once a month. It’s vital you protect the plant from cold drafts in winter and reduce watering at this time.

There’s no need to repot the plant every year. If it needs repotting or is under stress, it will produce insignificant white flowers, which are held on an elegant stem.

DK

The variegated snake plant is an upright plant that’s ideal for a tight corner.

PROBLEM SOLVING Water with caution, as overwatering can cause rotting roots and the complete collapse of the plant. Growing it in cactus potting mix encourages good drainage and helps to avoid death by overwatering. During the winter months, be very careful not to give the variegated snake plant too much water.

DK

Allow the top of the potting mix to dry out before watering.

DISPLAY

This plant is an excellent choice if space is limited in your home and you want to introduce height and impact. Each leaf can extend to as much as 30in (75cm). The eye-catching plant is more than capable of putting on an impressive display all by itself. However, if you plan to grow it as part of a group, pair it with plants that have contrasting leaf shapes such as the caster oil plant and the rubber plant. All these plants enjoy filtered sunlight and moderate humidity.
