Germany for

Natural Wonders

The beauty and diversity of Germany’s natural landscapes are world famous – and there are plenty of reasons why. From stunning coastline, through alpine mountain scenery to woodlands full of flora and fauna, the country is a haven for those looking to experience the great outdoors.

On the Coast

Germany’s coast offers something for everyone: crashing waves for windsurfers, beautiful beaches for families and health resorts for those who want to relax. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Schleswig-Holstein, which abut the Baltic coast, are host to a plethora of popular destinations – seek out the islands of Rügen and Usedom, and Jasmund National Park. On the North Sea side, Sylt island is an exceptional area of natural beauty.

Climbing a Mountain

Germany’s main mountain region is undoubtedly the Bavarian Alps, which form a natural divide along the Austrian border and include the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain. The Bavarian Alps are best explored via well-connected tourist hubs such as Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Berchtesgaden, Füssen and Oberstdorf. The neighbouring Berchtesgaden Alps also lay claim to some impressive peaks (most notably, Watzmann and Hochkönig). Want to stay a little closer to earth? Head to smaller mountain ranges such as the Fichtel Mountains and the Sächsische Schweiz (Saxon Switzerland), which are both close to the Czech border, the picturesque Harz mountains in Northern Germany, or the Taunus ranges north of Frankfurt.

Lakes, Rivers and Forests

Threaded by great rivers – the Rhine, Oder, Danube and Main –and speckled with simply stunning lakes – think Bodensee, Chiemsee or Königsee – Germany is perfect for a holiday on the water. Alternatively, make for a forest retreat; almost a third of the country is covered in forests, many of which offer hiking trails and canopy walkways, plus a chance to spot rare animals such as the Alpine ibex and golden eagle. There are plenty of places to choose from but our pick of the bunch are the Black Forest, Bavarian Forest and Jasmund National Park, which has the world’s few surviving primeval beech forests.
