Part Seven

Case Studies

In the last part of this book, we will present two case studies aimed at illustrating the importance of mobility modeling in two fundamental methodologies for wireless network performance evaluation: simulation and theoretical analysis. In the first case study, we will discuss how the standard implementation of the random waypoint model in wireless network simulation can lead to inaccurate results due to the border effect and speed decay phenomena. Then, we will present methodologies recently developed to remove the border effect and speed decay and, hence, the resulting simulation inaccuracy. In the second case study, we will consider the problem of deriving asymptotic performance bounds for opportunistic networks, and, through discussion of recently derived theoretical results, illustrate the profound impact of the mobility model used to perform the analysis on the derived performance bounds.
