Southwest USA

Margarita Bars

The margarita is the go-to cocktail in the Southwest. The mix of tequila, triple sec, and lime juice is usually served in a glass with salt around the rim. Maria’s New Mexican Kitchen has a Margarita list with over a hundred choices and is part of the Santa Fe Margarita Trail (www.santafe.org/Margaritatrail).

Craft Beers

While lighter Mexican brews have traditionally been the beers of choice in the hot climate of Southwest USA, there’s a booming craft beer scene throughout the region that suits beer lovers of all stripes. Try a Serrano Seduction, a wheat beer with chiles from Dillinger Brewing in Tucson (www.dillingerbrewing.com) or the equally spicy El Heffe (hefeveizen with roasted peppers) from Banger Brewing in Las Vegas (www.bangerbrewing.com).

Southwest Wine

Sonoita Vineyards (www.sonitavineyards.com) in Arizona has received national recognition for its Pinot Noir and Cabernet wines. Among New Mexico’s 60 wineries, the Gruet winery (www.gruetwinery.com) is known for its excellent sparkling wines.

Tequila Tasting

Discover the subtleties of this popular Mexican spirit, served widely in Southwest USA. The Cabo Wabo Cantina in Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas offers tasting flights of its own brand tequila, while 89Agave restaurant in Sedona (www.89agave.com) stocks 89 tequilas with several tasting options. At Santa Fe’s La Fonda on the Plaza hotel, the La Fiesta Lounge serves flights of tequila and mezcal.
