Volcanic Vistas

For the most iconic scenery in Costa Rica, shoot Volcán Arenal from the hilltop Arenal Observatory Lodge. The perfectly conical volcano is poised on the edge of Laguna de Arenal, punctuating rolling plains. For maximum effect, use a wide-angle lens to capture the cone rising from the treeline.

The White City

Liberia’s whitewashed, colonial bahareque (clay-built) houses and white dirt roads have loaned it the nickname La Ciudad Blanca (White City). The fetching townscape dazzles in the sun, especially in the harsh light of midday. Photographing the scene any time around lunch can be a challenge, so underexpose to boost the blue, blue sky; if photographing people, find shade. Stay long enough to take to the streets to shoot around sunset, when the city is bathed in an inviting warm glow.

Costa Rican Pastoral

With its coffee-workers in dusty straw hats and scarves hand-picking beans, villagers playing dominos in the shade, and cowboys on horseback, Costa Rica is full of bucolic tableaux. Many locals are happy to strike a pose, but be sure to engage with your subject and ask if you can take their photos. Use a zoom lens to get up close to capture their pura vida spirit.

Snapping Wildlife

Jazz up your photo album with colorful jungle snaps. To capture the best shot, drop to eye level to frame your subject in Parque Nacional Tortuguero. When shooting quetzals in San Gerardo de Dota, aim for a shallow depth of field to ensure the bird appears sharp against a blurred forest backdrop.

Insider Tip

Get Protected

To protect your camera gear from humidity and rain, place it inside a zip-lock bag containing a silica gel pack at night to absorb any moisture inside your camera and lens. A waterproof cover for your camera bag is also a good idea.
