*Interestingly, the only creatures capable of so-called cognitive empathy seem to be those that are also able to recognize their own image in the mirror: humans, dolphins, elephants, and the great apes. (Bonobos will even drape themselves in banana-leaf shawls and strut back and forth, preening. A macaque monkey, however, will attack its own image as if it were a rival.) Does it take a “self” to fully imagine an “other”?
