7.The Community Ecosystems Circles Model builds on concepts first written about by Urie Bronfenbrenner, when he described the interaction of children within their family and their family within their routine environment. It was originally published by Urie Bronfenbrenner (1979) in The Ecology of Human Development. Marilyn Larson adapted that first model as she provided staff leadership for the Minnesota Action for Children Commission in the early 1990s. Barreiro was a member of the Commission and participated in the model development discussions. The resulting model added the human dynamics for a child of the interactions of family and their surrounding environment. Using the expanded model the Action for Children Commission incorporated roles of government policies and of public attitudes in this ever more complex social ecology framework. That model for planning was then used by Barreiro in United Way community planning discussions. Those dialogues expanded the model with one more component of the concentric circles to acknowledge the role that professional interventive institutions do play.

6.Oster (1995).

7.Note that Oster (1995) separates “buyers” into two categories—the users or beneficiaries of the service or program and donors. She does not include donors as “suppliers” but rather emphasizes in this category labor suppliers. We prefer the categorization we use in this chapter because it emphasizes a broader view of “suppliers” to include several types of resources.
