Monitor
A CO
2
monitoring device has all the elements
of an Internet of Things application: hardware,
software, and data.That’s a big reason Guido
wanted to develop a kit for students to build a
device and use it in their schools (Figure
J
).
“The kit that the pupils are building these days
is easy to build,” he said.“It has a tons of options
and it gives us a lot of flexibility.”He encourages
the kids to create different ways to display the
data.“We ask the students to use their creativity
in thinking about how they want to present the
values, how they want to display this warning, and
what visuals or words they want to use,” he said.
As Guido began building kits for the students,
the Sensirion SCD30 was sold out, in part due to
his article on the CO
2
Traffic Light.Guido called

Montreal, created a CO

device for his
daughter, Odessa, to bring to her classroom
and monitor ventilation.His simple device
used the SCD30 CO
2
sensor connected to
an Adafruit Feather M4 Express.His initial
version did not store the CO
2
readings but
just displayed them.Odessa logged the data
manually on a chart, shown here, and at night
they’d review the chart and annotate it.
