CHAPTER 1

BASIC SKILLS

Most people can’t draw because they don’t understand the processes and skills that yield successful drawings. To the untrained eye, watching an artist draw is like watching a magician perform a trick. You know there must be a logical explanation but to the uninitiated, drawing is indistinguishable from magic.

But drawing is not magic. Like the art of illusion, there are perfectly rational explanations.

In reality a drawing is built like a house. Underneath the surface, there is a sturdy foundation. Just like the foundation of a house, the foundation of a drawing is not intended to be seen once the drawing is complete. The foundation is covered up by the features and flourishes we want the viewer to see. But without the foundation neither a drawing nor a house can be reliably constructed.

The foundation of a drawing is built from simple shapes like circles, ovals, triangles, and rectangles as well as variations on these shapes. The foundation of basic shapes should be drawn with very light lines so it can be easily adjusted or erased. Therefore, our first task is to learn how to draw lightly.
