In AWS, there are, of course, managed services within the infrastructure. This is why service layers were introduced. Service layers differ slightly from OpsWorks layers in the sense that there are no instances with agents within a service layer, but rather other AWS services, including the following:
- Elastic load balancing layer
- Amazon RDS service layer
- ECS cluster layers
- Custom layers
All of these can be used to extend the functionality of the OpsWorks environment to include AWS resources as layered representations. A typical representation of a mix of service and OpsWorks layers in the management console would look similar to the representation that's displayed in the following diagram:
