Coach me

Rather than proceeding along here to see the feedback generated from our entered question, we should point out that if you are new to Watson Analytics (or just haven't had your morning coffee yet!), there is the Watson Analytics coach to help you. To access the coach, you click on How to ask a question (shown in the upper right of the Here are some starting points for 'combine' display page).

When you do this, you will see various categories of questions; these are generated based upon the data file. You can take your time to look through the questions in each category and select actual values from drop-down lists.

  1. When you have selected one of the questions, you'll see a new set of starting points (as shown in the screenshot here):

  1. You'll notice that under Select a category, there is a drop-down list of categories and, conveniently, there is a category named Understand relationships and identify patterns.
  2. If we make this our selection, our Watson Analytics coach shows us the following questions, intending to help us use relationships in our data to identify one or more patterns in that data:

  1. Assume that we make some changes to the fields used in the first question (shown here) and then click the button labeled Ask:

  1. The response will again give us a new set of questions (as shown here):

  1. From here, we can drill deeper into our data using any of the provided starting points (or select Create new or shape data).
  1. Recall that within this exploration, we can always select a starting point and then move off into other areas. For example, if we click on What is the relationship between weight and heightinches by position? we can see the following visualization:

Visualization on relationship between weight and heightinches by position
  1. This visualization shows the relationship of a player's weight and height to the position that they play. Wouldn't it be interesting to see the average weight and height by position? To see that, we can ask Watson, How do the values of weight compare by position?

Visualization of average weight and height
  1. Next, we can easily change the visualization shown by replacing weight with heightfeet, and Watson Analytics automatically applies the change:

visualization shown by replacing weight with heightfeet

From this, the two insights we can see are that the average weight and height for the WR position are 5 feet 7 and just over 201 pounds (according to our data). This information begins to help us understand which player statistics may be the most relevant to the position played. You can see that, rather than constructing database query statements or filtering Excel worksheets and then reviewing tabular information, asking Watson Analytics questions and seeing the answer visualized is much more effective.
