Chapter 1 – The Essentials of IBM Watson

In our first chapter, we defined (the latest version of) IBM Watson Analytics as well as offered various objectives for the tool. We also provided an overview of Watson Analytics' current interface, pointing out its major components. A refresher on performing basic tasks in Watson Analytics (such as adding data, exploring data, and creating a prediction) was also given.

The following are the key takeaways:

  • IBM Watson was named after IBM's first CEO and industrialist, Thomas J. Watson and the term Cognitive is defined as concerned with the act or process of knowing or perceiving.
  • IBM Watson lives in the IBM cloud, which makes it relatively easy to get started using Watson Analytics.

  • The IBM Cloud platform is where you can access all of the power of the IBM Watson Platform and build applications using prebuilt services and APIs. This is where you can also initially access IBM Watson Analytics.
  • Like the IBM Cloud dashboard, the Watson Analytics dashboard is organized with a title or menu bar across the top of the page then (below the page) you'll find the Search/Add/Filter/Sort bar followed by an open space where content panels will appear.
  • Under the Watson Analytics menu bar is the Quick Start Information bar consisting of larger icons used to organize and provide for quick access to: Explore, Predict, Assemble, Social Media, and Refine.
  • In the Watson search bar, you will find the features that allow you to search for, sort, and otherwise filter the content panels/tiles that currently exist within your Watson Analytics account. In the center, perhaps the most important, is the Add icon, allowing you to create new Watson assets or add more data to your Watson account.
  • All of the Watson Analytics assets that you either previously created or have been granted access to show up in the content panel area as individual content panels/tiles that you can click on, to access and edit/update.
  • Explore is designed to allow you to use visualizations to gain an understanding of the data you are interested in so that you can notice patterns and relationships within that.
  • Predict delivers insights based on internal modeling in the form of predictions based on the data you provide.
  • Another fundamental feature of IBM Watson is Assemble. Simply put, you can use this to group the results generated from using Explore and Predict.
  • Newer to IBM's Watson is the built-in Social Media capabilities designed to allow discovery of insights based upon data gathered by IBM Watson from keywords and hashtags you choose.
  • IBM Watson Refine provides the ability to hone, enhance, polish, improve, or even perfect the data you are planning to use in your IBM Watson Analytics project.
  • You can add new data to IBM Watson without. The data can be contained in a cloud-based or on-premise database, or simply uploaded to IBM Watson as a simple text file.
