Methodologies to choose from

The choice of methodology selection is limited but needs to be done carefully based on business goals and project/program goals. The primary methodologies we have seen being used in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations are as follows:

  • Conference Room Pilot (CRP): This methodology is a blend of agile and waterfall and can smartly use this to achieve goals of all sizes, big or small. This is widely used and accepted for various cloud-based initiatives.
  • Agile: This methodology is good in select scenarios such as development, support, and enhancements. However, for a greenfield initiative of implementing Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations, this may not always be so useful. When the project duration is short and goals are clearly defined and non-changeable, this methodology will be found useful.
  • Waterfall: This is a traditional methodology, which banks on clearly defined stages and deliverables, and is often used when the duration of the project is longer. This methodology carries some risk and in contrast to agile and CRP, the output is not seen early enough. Usually, big-bang project initiatives in implementing ERP are seen using this one. In the modern cloud world, getting early stakeholder buy-in is key to the high adoption of a new ERP and seeing the benefits of managing change within an organization.
  • Hybrid: This is a mix-and-match kind of approach utilizing both agile and waterfall techniques. For different phases and different deliverables, sometimes agile could be used, while at other times waterfall could be used. Agile is closely related to the CRP methodology, however, it could be on a longer time horizon.

Let's learn about these methodologies in detail in the next subsection.
