PART III

Post-Trip Well-being

Travel is a new experience that can transport you out of your everyday routine to create memories with the ones you love.

—Brian Chesky

In this part of the book, we will talk about how we can use the post-trip period to heighten and prolong the positive impact of our travels. Similar to anticipating our trips before they take place, remembering trips after they are over can enhance and intensify the pleasure we obtain from them. Even though our physical trips are long behind us, memories of them can linger in our minds, and these memories can be an important part of our delight in our total trip experience (Fridgen 1984). We remember because we want to hold onto and bring back something that was meaningful to us (Selstad 2007; Cary 2004; Pearce 2005). Reflecting on memories allows us to extend our joy in our experiences and can provide us with endless sources of well-being (Hammitt 1980).

Let’s now consider more about what we can do to evoke nourishing trip memories and how travel providers might work with us in this effort. As we do this, we will talk about multiple ways of enhancing our post-trip reflections that speak to our different interests and styles. For instance, we will look at: the power of physical mementos, the joy of sharing stories, the insights gained from verbal reflection and journaling, and the pleasure of extending and deepening knowledge in new directions.
