72 / LEADING FROM A DISTANCE
Understanding the
Remote Leadership Model
The Remote Leadership Model is a simple way of visualizing the
experience of leading from a distance. It uses three interlocking
“gears” to show how your established leadership skills need to
work with new technologies to drive your organization forward.
The job of leading—what we
do—hasn’t changed nearly as
much as how we do it
ASK YOURSELF…
YES NO
Am I making the best use of my resources?
1 What tools do you have to help you get the job done? ....................
2 Are you relying too much on tools you’re comfortable using
and avoiding new ones that are better? ..........................................
3 Have there been any times when you could have done a better
job by adopting new technology? .....................................................
4 Are there any tools, new or old, that hinder your
eectiveness? ....................................................................................
5 Are you taking the opportunity for training
in new technologies? .........................................................................
6 Are you making sure your sta have the opportunity
for training? (see pp.86–87) .............................................................
A wider view of leadership
Developed by management experts
Kevin Eikenberry and Wayne Turmel, the
Remote Leadership Model is a prompt to
ask yourself key questions when leading
remotely. It reminds you that when you
manage from a distance, core leadership
skills remain essentially the same, but
what’s happening around them changes.
Remain open to new technologies and
ways of working, and be willing and able
to learn them—your skills as a leader
don’t operate in a vacuum. Use the
model to help you zoom out and see how
leading eectively involves interacting
with changing practicalities, too.
