Acknowledgments

Over the years, several important advisors, mentors, and friends have encouraged Dr. Lazes to pursue his passion for helping union and management leaders involve frontline staff in strategic decision making. Some of those who have helped me on this journey have been union and management leaders— Pam Brier, Mike Bennett, Neal Bisno, the late Irving Bluestone, Gary Bryner, Patricia Castillo, Marie-Cecile Charlier, Kevin Collins, the late Don Ephlin, the late Doug Fraser, Des Geraghty, Mary Kay Henry, Tony Kallevig, Dr. Mitch Katz, Dr. Toni Lewis, the late Gene McCabe, Wilson Mendez, Matt Merrigan, Nicole Moore, Frank Proscia, the late John Reid, Bruce Richard, David Rolf, Kris Rondeau, Josh Rutkoff, Steve Safyer, Eric Scherzer, the late Jack Sheinkman, Bob Schoonover, Andy Stern, Kelly Trautner, Gilda Valdez, Randi Weingarten, and Zack Zobrist. Each, in his or her own way, has helped me understand how unions can play an important role in protecting the rights of workers while also contributing to change processes that benefit patients and their communities.

Researchers at the Norwegian Work Research Institute, Ragnar Johansen and the late Einar Thorsrud, helped me understand the history of industrial democracy in Europe and the role that employee participation activities play in sustaining an active democracy. Paul Clark, Adrienne Eaton, Amy Edmondson, the late Max Elden, the late Abraham Maslow, Bill Sonnenstuhl, and Marv Weisbord, important colleagues as well as gifted scholars and practitioners, have been exceedingly generous mentors who have encouraged me during different stages of my career. Their influence on my life, my values, and my thinking cannot be overstated.

At the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Maria Figueroa, Jeff Grabelsky, Chris Miller, Jane Savage, and the late William F. Whyte have immeasurably supported my research and educational activities. The late Lois Gray, also at Cornell, was an extremely important colleague and mentor who first encouraged me to join the faculty there. With her help I was able to use the university as a home for exploring the importance of Labor-Management Partnerships and contributing to their development in multiple settings.

Consultants Sid Rubinstein, now deceased, and Stu Winby helped me along the way to more deeply understand the practice and methods involved in authentic worker participation. Lastly, I want to acknowledge Liana Katz for her help in researching and editing this book. She was an invaluable research assistant throughout the process of its creation.

I also want to thank the workers I have come to know over the years who have inspired me with their deep knowledge and passion for their work.

I, Dr. Rudden, wish to remember the late Professor Sidney Mintz, who ignited my enthusiasm for the study of culture in the Yale Anthropology Department, and the late Dr. Roger Shapiro, who led a Tavistock study group during my psychiatric residency that inspired my later work on leadership and the group experience. Drs. Edward Shapiro, Kenneth Eisold, and Vamik Volkan have been important influences in my ongoing study of group behavior and my understanding of the ways in which organizations are influenced by the larger contexts in which they operate. Dr. Stuart Twemlow helped me to appreciate the role of natural leaders in supporting their organizations and communities.

Pam Brier, the former CEO of Maimonides Medical Center, deserves a huge shout-out for supporting and facilitating my research into leadership and group regressions, as does the International Psychoanalytic Association’s Research Program and Grants Committee. I am very grateful to John Clarkin, PhD, who mentored my research, and to Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations for their sponsorship of it. I also owe a good deal to the late Dr. Manuel Furer and to Dr. Robert Michels for their trenchant insights and their significant contributions to my life, both personal and professional.

I would also very much like to thank my patients, who have taught me more than I ever hoped to know.

Both of us offer special thanks to Drs. Paul Clark, John Markowitz, Barbara Milrod, and Bill Sonnenstuhl, and to Robert Sadin and Eric Scherzer, for their close readings of our manuscript and for their invaluable editorial advice. Finally, we thank Rick Finkelstein, whose artistry in designing our book cover has wowed everyone who has seen it.
