ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Ed Hiner is a genuine hero of the global war on terrorism. In his 20-year career as a Navy SEAL, he made nine major deployments on five continents, half of which were combat tours. Twice awarded the Bronze Star with V for valor and combat leadership, Hiner commanded hundreds of direct combat missions and low-visibility operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, Southeast Asia, and Central America.

Born and raised in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Hiner grew up with a thirst for competition, and he developed an indomitable will to win that would serve him well in his life’s work as a warrior and leader. His talent earned him a scholarship to Virginia Commonwealth University, where he was a Division One baseball player. During a holiday break from college in Virginia Beach, Hiner spent a day helping out a Navy wife who was being forced from her home while her husband was deployed to the Persian Gulf. On a trip to her storage unit, Hiner met an active duty Navy SEAL who volunteered to help. The ensuing day-long conversation provided Hiner (who had never heard of the SEALs) with the spark he needed. He hitchhiked back to Richmond, went straight to the U.S. Navy recruiter, and enlisted.

Hiner graduated from the Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in 1993 with class 189. Prior to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Hiner deployed several times as an enlisted SEAL Operator. He was then picked to attend Officer Candidate School where he earned his commission as a distinguished honor graduate and class president. Following that, Hiner earned a master’s degree in executive leadership from the University of San Diego. He went on to make numerous deployments as a SEAL Officer.

Shortly after 9/11, Hiner was selected to integrate directly into the elite British Special Boat Service (SBS), where he served as Executive Officer and Task Force Black team member at the height of the Iraq War and follow-on counterinsurgency efforts. For his efforts while serving in Task Force Black, Hiner was specially promoted to Lieutenant Commander and given command of his own SEAL Task Unit, which deployed to Ramadi at the peak of the Iraq insurgency. This was the first time in the history of the SEAL Teams that a Lieutenant was promoted to Lieutenant Commander for the express purpose of leading a specific combat deployment.

Throughout his SEAL career, Hiner felt it imperative that he continually pass along what he had learned. In addition to his combat tours, in his role as a Navy Special Warfare Training Officer, Hiner was responsible for shaping, training, and qualifying hundreds of Navy SEALs. He has trained students at the BUD/S school; he has trained the trainers who train the students; he has been the officer in charge of training at the BUD/S school; and he has managed all basic and advanced training for West Coast SEAL Teams, and then for all Navy SEALs. He has trained all SEAL Team members to be leaders. He is among the most experienced SEAL trainers in the history of the organization.

Hiner is the Los Angeles Times bestselling author of First, Fast, Fearless: How to Lead Like a Navy SEAL and a contributor to the San Diego Union Tribune. He is featured in the books Leading at a Higher Level by Ken Blanchard and The Sheriff of Ramadi by Dick Couch, as well as in The History Channel documentary series Navy SEALs: America’s Secret Warriors.

Through The Hiner Group, he draws on this vast experience as a coach and consultant specializing in leadership, team building, mental toughness, resilience, and self-leadership. A highly sought-after keynote speaker for corporate events, he is the ethos officer and mental toughness coach for the professional basketball team, the San Diego Guardians. Hiner is also the founder and president of Asymmetrical Evolution, a youth education company dedicated to underserved youth in San Diego, California, and throughout the country.

He lives with his wife, Wendy, and son, Jake, in La Jolla, California.
