3D PRINTING IS ADVANCING HEALTH CARE: CUSTOMIZED
MEDICAL APPLIANCES
Have you heard of a company called Smile Direct? Smile Direct manufactures clear dental retainers that
are perfectly formed to the shape of your own teeth, guiding them to be more straight over time. Smile
Direct sends you a dental mold kit you bite into and send back. They then make a 3D printed mold of your
teeth. From that mold, they are able to make the retainers around that form. Each retainer is customized
and no two are exactly the same as shown in this concept image (Figure 3-10). Smile Direct makes millions
of sets of retainers per year and because they rely on the accuracy of digital manufacturing, customers do
not need to see a dentist in person.
Another example of how the dental industry is using 3D printing can be illustrated by how ceramic caps
can be made for patients that want to change the shape of their teeth. A dentist will create a mold of a
patient’s teeth and 3D print the mold using a detailed high resolution resin printer. The ceramic veneers are
designed based on the digital 3D printed model as shown in Figure 3-11.
Another example of what we feel could be a very large application in medical appliances is customiz-
