Several common filament materials are described in Figure 4-19, but note that some of these materials may or may
not work with your 3D printer. It is best to check with your 3D printer manufacturer to see which materials they support.
There is a wide variety of filament available, ranging in price from $12/kg to $70/kg. This wide range in price
does not always yield a better filament, so we advise you to rely on research and product reviews to inform
your choice in materials.

HERE IS A LIST OF SOME VARIABLES YOU SHOULD CONSIDER:
Check if your printer manufacturer has tested the filament that they sell with the printer you
purchased from them. These filaments will usually be at a slightly higher price, but you will
know that they have done the testing for you.
Find online sites with user reviews. If others have printed well with filament from a specific man-
ufacturer, then chances are that filament will print well for you too. Most reviews are real, but
like with any review format, some may be fake.
Try to purchase filament from large manufacturers. They usually have conducted more testing
and are less likely to produce faulty filament.
Long story short: Having a great 3D printer with an awesome 3D model will not be able to save a failed print
from bad quality filament.
Now that you have learned how FDM 3D printers work, let’s discuss the reality of the 3D printing learning
curve: 3D prints fail, and quite often. The next chapter reviews some common print problems you might
encounter with consumer FDM printing, and how to troubleshoot them.
