Acknowledgments

Writing a book is a complex, purpose-driven project. The pressure escalates when the deadline is approaching and you still have many pages to write. It’s like running a marathon—constantly on your mind for months and sometimes years—but when you finally cross the finish line you have the great satisfaction of seeing the outcome of your dedication and hard work.

It is impossible to accomplish such an endeavor without the support of the family. Thanks to my exceptional wife, Clarisse; my amazing children, Laura, Alexander, Selma, and Lucas; my caring parents, Maria Jose and Juan Antonio; and my brilliant brothers, Javi, Iñaki, and Jose Miguel.

I want to especially thank my editor at Harvard Business Review Press, Dave Lievens, for his fantastic advice and guidance throughout the book development process and for pushing me to get the best out of myself and make this my best book yet. Thanks also to Jen Waring for her great proofreading skills. And of course I want to thank Jonathan Norman for his invaluable support, which started in 2012 with my first book, The Focused Organization. Thanks also to Richard Pharro, Stuart Crainer, Judy Miao, Ron Ashkenas, and Ray Sheen, who kindly volunteered to review the manuscript and provided valuable insights and recommendations.

Even so, this book will not accomplish its purpose and deliver any benefits unless people read it, learn from it, and apply some of the concepts to make them more successful. For that I want to thank the extremely supportive marketing team at the Press, led by Sally Ashworth.

Finally, I would like to thank the editors of Harvard Business Review for giving me the opportunity to write the HBR Project Management Handbook. It is the perfect culmination and recognition of a quest I started in 2004 to elevate project management from a tactical topic to the new lingua franca of business. It also confirms the importance of projects and the project management profession in our new world driven by change. Therefore I would like to also dedicate this book to the millions of project managers who, with their hard work—often unrecognized—contribute to making this a better world.
