Apache Tomcat is a Java Web container, implementing Java Servlet and JavaServer Pages specifications. In fact, it is Reference Implementation of these specifications. It also has the distinction of being production quality, function rich, developer friendly, and the Web container of choice for a growing number of websites.

Apache Tomcat has been developed in an open and participatory environment hosted by Apache Software Foundation and released under open source compliant Apache Software License. Its stable release at the time of writing (April 2003), Tomcat 4.1.xx, implements Java Servlet 2.3 and JavaServer Pages 1.2. Upcoming version 5.x will implement Java Servlet 2.4 and Java ServerPages 2.0.
